For my mid-term project in Fashion Forecasting, we were tasked to pick a piece of clothing and show evolution of that piece. My group member and I decided to do a deep dive into bras because of how much bras have changed over time, and still continue to do so.

Gaining an understanding:
I started the project by conducting in‑depth research on the evolution of bras, tracing their development from early undergarments in the 16th century to modern innovations. I gathered historical context, cultural influences, and key milestones—such as the introduction of cup sizes, wartime shifts, and the rise of fashion‑focused lingerie. Organizing this information into a clear, chronological timeline helped establish the foundation for our analysis and guided the direction of the entire project.

After building the timeline, I moved into analyzing how each historical shift influenced the design, purpose, and cultural meaning of bras. This stage involved connecting major moments, like wartime manufacturing changes, the rise of cup sizes, feminist movements, and the shift from function to fashion to broader consumer and societal trends. By interpreting these patterns, I developed a clear concept for how the evolution of bras reflects changing values, technology, and body ideals, which guided the narrative and structure of the final project.
The Final Product:
In the last stage of the project, I brought together our research, analysis, and visual elements to create a cohesive presentation of the bra’s evolution. This included refining our timeline, organizing key insights, and highlighting major cultural and industry shifts in a clear, engaging format. I focused on presenting the information in a way that connected historical context to modern trends, ensuring the final project was both visually compelling and easy to understand.
Takeaway:
Through this project, I gained a deeper understanding of how intimate apparel reflects broader cultural, social, and technological shifts. I learned how to analyze a garment’s evolution across centuries and connect historical milestones to modern consumer behavior and brand strategy. I also strengthened my ability to translate research into clear visual storytelling, collaborate effectively, and evaluate how media, feminism, and innovation shape today’s lingerie market. Overall, the project helped me see how a single garment can reveal the changing values and priorities of each era.
